Westlaw Features

Wondered what your Westlaw account gives you access to?  Here's a list from a January 2021 email from Asa:

Practical Law for everyone: Previously, our firm license was limited to a handful of Practical Law seats. Now, it is available to all of our attorneys. This powerful tool provides functional, practical guidance on how to practice, including many excellent forms, contracts, agreements, and sample pleadings.

Westlaw Edge: Westlaw edge is a powerful new tool that leverages AI to reduce non-billable tasks and improve research processes. It includes a feature called Quick Check, that allows the program to analyze your brief (or the brief of opposing counsel) to check the included authority and ensure citations are complete and accurate, as well as identify the legal issues and suggest relevant authority you may have missed. It includes KeyCite overruling risk, which not only identifies explicit overruling risks, but also implicit undermining. WestSearch Plus is also included, which leverages AI-enhanced search to improve relevance. Litigation Analytics is also a new feature, providing insight on judges, courts, attorneys, law firms, and case types to help in managing case strategy, expectations, timelines, and cost. A number of other features are also included.

Drafting Assistant: Allows you to research, format, cite-check, and analyze case law all within the Word document being drafted. This is available in the Practical Law menu.

PeopleMap: This powerful tool was utilized a number of times in 2020, at substantial cost. It is now included in our subscription for everyone to use. This tool allows you to perform all your public records research in one place, as well as allowing for customization of search. This feature includes basics (arrest records, bankruptcy records, lawsuits, liens, asset information, residence information, etc.) along with internet and social media activity.

Company Investigator:   This tool provides access to comprehensive public records reports on over 300 million businesses, including private companies and partnerships.  It is an excellent due diligence tool to deploy for our clients among many other potential uses.  It provides corporate tree structures, information on bankruptcy filings, litigation history, financial and legal advisors and much more.

Secondary Sources: Expanded access to secondary sources for the states we operate in.

Court Materials:  We will have access to a full-suite of court materials that we did not have before.  This includes access to trial court orders and other documents, briefs, expert materials, trial transcripts, dockets and more.

West LegalEdcenter: (No longer part of our subscription)

Westlaw Today: This is a legal news service powered by Reuters, providing timely and comprehensive legal news and analysis. This content is not only informative for us, it is also easy to post/share to social media like LinkedIn to allow us to easily provide exclusive content and improve professional visibility online.
